Before the itinerary

I really wanted to see Anshun Bridge (安顺廊桥), one of Chengdu’s most recognizable landmarks. There was only one small problem: I had not quite understood where I should go to see it. That is how I ended up, almost by accident, boarding a boat for a night cruise on the Jinjiang River. In the end, I think I found the bridge in the best possible way.

01

The Jinjiang River night cruise

The boat follows the Jinjiang River as illuminated buildings, riverbanks and bridges appear along the route. It was from the water that I discovered a completely different side of the city.

By day, Chengdu had meant pandas, parks, tea houses and a surprisingly gentle pace for a city of its size. At night, the experience changed—and I still did not know exactly when the bridge I was looking for would appear.

02

Anshun Bridge: the landmark I wanted to find

Then it appeared: Anshun Bridge, its traditionally inspired Chinese architecture glowing above the Jinjiang River.

I had wanted to see the bridge, but I had never planned to experience it from this angle. Perhaps that element of chance is precisely why the outing stayed with me. I boarded without knowing what I would find and suddenly saw, from the water, the exact place I had been searching for.

03

Seeing Chengdu from the water

The city changes when seen from the river. Lights ripple across the water, bridges gain a different scale and the urban landscape feels more intense than the parks and tea houses of the daytime itinerary.

The cruise became more than a way to reach Anshun Bridge. It revealed a Chengdu I had not yet seen—brighter, busier and more theatrical, yet still pleasant to take in slowly.

04

Is the Chengdu night cruise worth it?

I would do it again. Not only for Anshun Bridge, but because it showed me another side of Chengdu.

During the day, I loved the city for its parks, tea houses and unhurried daily life. At night, I found a completely different experience. If you enjoy illuminated cities and evening boat rides, set aside one night for it.

05

How to add it to your itinerary

Keep one evening free to walk along the Jinjiang River, see Anshun Bridge illuminated and, if the opportunity appears, take the boat ride.

Save the Chinese name—安顺廊桥—to use in maps or ride-hailing apps. Boarding points, routes and operating times can change, so confirm that day’s service with your hotel or at the riverfront before arranging the evening.
